Saudi Arabian and Chinese Universities Partner to Develop Arabic-centric AI System

Algoine News
Summary:
Saudi Arabia's King Abdullah University of Science and Technology, in partnership with two Chinese institutions, has developed AceGPT, an AI system projected to serve Arabic-speaking users. With an emphasis on recognizing potential misuse and urging responsible usage due to a lack of thorough safety checks, the technology aims to evolve the AI space in the Kingdom, aligning with Saudi's ambitions of becoming a regional leader in emerging tech sectors.
In a partnership with two Chinese academia, Saudi Arabia's King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) has developed an artificial intelligence (AI) system, AceGPT, geared towards serving Arabic-speaking users. Spearheaded by a Chinese-American professor at KAUST, the project also involved the School of Data Science at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen (CUHKSZ) and the Shenzhen Research Institute of Big Data (SRIBD). According to its GitHub page, the system operates as an AI helper providing answers primarily in Arabic. It, however, may not yield satisfactory results in other languages. The developers have worked on enhancing the system to identify potential misuse like mistreating sensitive data, generating harmful content, spreading misinformation or failing safety protocols. Yet, with the absence of comprehensive safety checks, the project advises users to use the AI responsibly. The creators have relied on existing open-source data and research-specific data in crafting AceGPT. This development coincides with Saudi Arabia's ongoing pursuit to establish itself as a regional powerhouse in evolving tech sectors such as AI. The Saudi central bank teamed up with the Hong Kong Monetary Authority on digital tokens and payment systems in July. Earlier this year, the Saudi government also joined forces with the metaverse platform, Sandbox, to expedite future metaverse initiatives. Meanwhile, US regulators have asked AI chip manufacturers Nvidia and AMD to reduce exports of sophisticated semiconductors, key in AI development, to an unspecified list of countries in the Middle East. Despite this, US regulators deny directly affecting AI chip exports to the region.
