Brian Carter, a chief intelligence analyst at Chainalysis, informed Cointelegraph that the most efficient drain kits are adaptable, capable of draining a multitude of assets through various approaches. He noticed a strong Russian connection to the small group of developers selling drainer kits, often recognizing the documentation in Russian. Carter revealed that the leading community dedicated to a single Solana drainer contains approximately 6,200 members. He recommended the use of Wallet Guard and similar tools to reduce risk, stating that link phishing is a typical assault technique. Wallet Guard has recently initiated protective measures against Solana drain attacks.
Many drainers manipulate the Fear of Missing Out among users and inundate DeFi community members with fraudulent website links that appear legitimate. Social media accounts and Discord communities often fall victim to hacking and used to further these harmful links. According to Chainalysis, a multitude of cybercriminals began advertising Solana drainer kits to con-artists in December. Sold on private hacker chats and the dark web, these kits can go for a mere $250 monthly. They are designed to enable cybercrime through the draining of funds from digital wallets, mainly via phishing scams that trick users into entering their wallet details onto counterfeit sites.
There's uncertainty over the exact sum stolen by all Solana drainers, as per Certik analyst Joe Green. He mentioned that some cases display a similar approach to EVM drainers, where the provider claims a percentage of the stolen assets. Cybercriminals have turned their attention to the Solana network due to the renewed interest in Solana's price. SOL prices have seen a 400% increase over the previous three months.
Blockchain security firm Blockaid reported that one Solana drainer in particular stole hundreds of thousands of dollars in SOL and SPL tokens on January 2nd. It pointed out the sophisticated nature of these drainers, capable of tricking Solana wallet simulations into signing malevolent transactions unknowingly.
