Potential Risks of AI Tools in Smart Contracts and Cryptocurrency Projects Discussed at Korean Blockchain Week

Algoine News
Summary:
Artificial intelligence tools like ChatGPT and their potential risks in smart contract writing and cryptocurrency projects are discussed by industry experts at Korean Blockchain Week. CertiK's chief security officer warns that ChatGPT may introduce more bugs than it identifies, especially for novice coders. Additionally, AI tools are becoming more successful in social engineering attacks, posing challenges to differentiate between AI-generated and human-generated messages. Improved anti-phishing software is expected to help mitigate potential attacks in the crypto industry.
Artificial intelligence tools like ChatGPT from OpenAI could pose significant problems, bugs, and attack vectors if utilized for writing smart contracts and developing cryptocurrency projects, warns CertiK's chief security officer, Kang Li. According to Li, ChatGPT lacks the ability to identify logical code flaws that experienced developers can, potentially leading to more bugs and failures for novice coders attempting to build their own projects. Instead, Li suggests that ChatGPT should be used as an assistant for engineers, as it excels at explaining the meaning behind lines of code. However, Li cautions against relying on it for writing code, especially for inexperienced programmers looking to create monetizable projects. Li stands by his assertions for at least the next two to three years, acknowledging the possible advancements in AI that could improve ChatGPT's capabilities. In a separate statement, Richard Ma, CEO of Quantstamp, a web3 security firm, notes that AI tools are becoming increasingly effective at social engineering attacks, with AI-generated messages that are challenging to distinguish from those written by humans. Ma warns that as technology progresses, it will become harder to differentiate between malicious AI-generated messages and genuine human communication. This poses a particular risk for the crypto industry, where hackers can exploit readily available contact information and deploy AI to impersonate key individuals. However, Ma believes that improved anti-phishing software can aid in mitigating potential attacks.
