Polygon Co-Founder Discusses Layer-2 Network Enhancements and Future Plans on Hashing It Out Podcast

Algoine News
Summary:
In episode 48 of the Hashing It Out podcast, Polygon co-founder, Brendan Farmer discusses layer-2 networks and Polygon's recent product releases, including its AggLayer and the new "Type 1 prover" feature. The "Type 1 prover" allows any Ethereum Virtual Machine network to become a layer-2 network using zero-knowledge proofs, aiming to enhance user experience and bridge the fragmented layer-2 ecosystem. Despite highlighting these fragmentation issues, Farmer asserts that more layer-2 networks are needed to accommodate high-level crypto adoption.
Brendan Farmer, the co-founder of Polygon, visited the Hashing It Out podcast, episode 48, hosted by Elisha Owusu Akyaw. They engaged in insightful discussions about layer-2 networks and Polygon's numerous recent product launches, such as their aggregation layer—AggLayer, and the freshly unveiled "Type 1 prover". The Type 1 prover is an innovative feature that can transform any Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) network into a layer-2 network running on zero-knowledge proofs (ZK-proofs). This technology permits a connection with the wider Polygon ecosystem to help mend the scattering issues present across layer 2s. Toposware assisted in the creation of this technology, which Farmer stated took around a year. It provides the capability of producing ZK-proofs for mainnet Ethereum blocks at an affordable rate and grants any EVM chain to become a ZK layer-2, consequently integrating with the Polygon AggLayer. Farmer emphasized the requirement for a superior user experience by connecting the scattered layer-2 ecosystem to establish Ethereum as the platform of choice for the anticipated surge in adoption. Using Solana's year-round success as the reference, he stated that a seamless user experience can be achieved through a unified environment, eliminating the need for bridging or thinking about what rollup to use. Farmer acknowledges the problem of layer-2 ecosystem fragmentation but contends that more layer-2 networks are needed. He postulates that for a crypto ecosystem functioning at internet scale to accommodate maximum-level adoption, an ample number of layer 2s are essential. When asked how Polygon intends to stay competitive amidst the rising layer-2 network development trendsuch as Optimisim's OP Stack, zkSync's ZK Stack, and the Polygon Chain Development Kit, Farmer responded with their plan to establish a network effect around the AggLayer. He theorized that if AggLayer presents itself as the fastest route for liquidity and users, more developers would be inclined to utilize Polygon. Farmer also pointed out that the network promises a superior experience for users and developers without restrictions like revenue sharing.
