Platforms Ban Taylor Swift Searches Amid Deepfake Scandal, Sparks Call for Stricter Laws

Algoine News
Summary:
In light of AI-generated explicit images of Taylor Swift, social media platforms have temporarily banned searches related to her. The pop singer is also reportedly contemplating legal actions against the deepfake site that released the images. Subsequently, politicians are urging for stronger legislation against such non-consensual deepfakes. This comes amidst a global surge in deepfakes, prompting outcry from various public figures who have been victimized.
In light of the spread of AI-produced explicit images of the pop singer Taylor Swift, X, a notable social media platform moved to put a temporary halt on all search requests linked to the star's name. As it stands, attempts to search "Taylor Swift," "Taylor Swift AI," or the reversed version yield no results. This action from X comes in reaction to a surge of counterfeit visuals of the famed musician spreading across the web. While a number of these images were inoffensive, the primary cause for public shock were the enormously sexually suggestive images. Instagram, the popular image and video-sharing platform, appears to have taken comparable steps, appending disclaimers to searches for “Taylor Swift AI.” The star is reportedly mulling over legal pursuit of the deepfake site responsible for distributing these explicit images. Days before this, on January 27, Joseph Morelle, a White House Representative, objected vehemently to these viral images of Swift, advocating for the introduction of legal regulations that would make production of deepfakes a criminal act. Morelle is the architect behind "The Preventing Deepfakes of Intimate Images Act" which was introduced in May 2023. This makes the creation of non-consensual deepfakes a federal offense and hence an urgent matter. In October of the same year, another bill was suggested in Senate proposing punishment for creators of all AI-constructed deepfakes, irrespective of whether they're sexually explicit or intimate. Over the past twelve months, public outcry from many celebrities towards deepfakes has incredibly spiked. SumSub data reveals a tenfold increase in globally spread deepfakes across diverse sectors from 2022 to 2023. In the prior year, several public figures were victims of far-spread deepfakes made to promote items they had not endorsed. Victims included the well-known actor Tom Hanks, YouTube sensation MrBeast, and celebrated American broadcast journalist Gayle King. On January 15, Michael Saylor, the executive chairman of MicroStrategy, disclosed an astonishing removal of close to 80 deepfake videos of himself daily.
