Own The Doge Acquires Legal Rights to Iconic Shiba Inu Meme, Eyes Big Brand Partnerships

Algoine News
Summary:
Own The Doge, the decentralized autonomous organization tied to Dogecoin, has obtained legal rights to the well-known Shiba Inu meme. The organization's project leaders confirmed the deal with original meme owner, Sato Atsuko, guaranteeing control over the meme's use in cryptocurrency markets and merchandise. The move aims to clear confusion around copyright and open doors for partnerships with major brands.
The decentralized autonomous organization (DAO) linked with the Shiba Inu meme of Dogecoin (DOGE), Own The Doge, has confirmed it has acquired the legal rights to the famous image. In an interview with Cointelegraph on April 17, heads of the Own The Doge initiative, John Monarch and 'Tridog', declared that they had finalized an agreement with Sato Atsuko, the keeper of the 18-year-old Shiba Inu Kabosu, known for her puzzled look while sitting on a sofa. The team procured the exclusive privilege and authority for the Doge picture, transferring control over merchandise and other meme uses in the crypto arena to them. Tridog asserted that “[the agreement] reveals a lot for companies, where there's uncertainity around copyright”. With more certainty around the doge image copyright, which had apparently been unregulated for years, Own The Doge sees opportunities for collaborations with substantial brands. According to the project, they connected with Sato about three years ago and managed to buy the rights to Kabosu's picture through the help of legal specialists in Japan and the U.S. In collaboration with Sato and others, the initiative has already unveiled a film detailing the history and evolution of the doge image within and beyond the crypto world. It's important to note, Tridog mentioned the group had no intention of "implementing" its copyright claim against users or some brands already embracing the image to promote its 'doing only good everyday' slogan. The primary goal is to “bring together the entire doge community,” Monarch noted, adding that Dogecoin, along with other entities such as NFTs [nonfungible tokens], meme enthusiasts and the Reddit community have mostly diverged and need to coalesce under a shared culture. The famed Doge image traces its origin back to 2010, when Sato took a casual picture of Kabosu lounging on a yellow couch in her home in Japan. Interestingly, Monarch claimed to be the first person to coin the term ‘Doge’ on social media, giving birth to several other memes, the Dogecoin token, and a range of crypto-themed products. The newly acquired licensing rights won't necessarily affect the Dogecoin Foundation or the meme token, which still employs the image, Tridog said. Kabosu is expected to mark her 19th birthday on November 2 with a party in Japan. Despite reaching a grand age for dogs, she's still got some way to match the record of the oldest Shiba Inu, who lived past the ripe old age of 26.
