OpenAI to Launch 'Preparedness Framework' for Assessing AI Risks, Following CEO Reinstatement

Algoine News
Summary:
OpenAI, an artificial intelligence (AI) developer, plans to introduce a 'Preparedness Framework'. This scheme includes a dedicated team tasked with assessing potential risks. The strategy seeks to add a checks-and-balances system to protect against possible risks from advanced models. The plan includes a process where safety reports are examined and then sent for company-level review, with the new framework allowing the board to reverse safety decisions. This follows a turbulent period for OpenAI, with CEO Sam Altman being fired and subsequently reinstated. Amid rising public interest and concerns for AI, leading developers, including OpenAI, have established The Frontier Forum for self-regulation and the Biden Administration has outlined new AI safety standards.
OpenAI, an artificial intelligence (AI) developer, recently divulged plans to launch a 'Preparedness Framework'. This strategy involves the formation of a dedicated team aiming to assess and forecast potential risks. The company's recently published blog post, dated December 18, stated that this 'Preparedness Team' will link the safety and policy divisions of OpenAI. This system, functioning in a checks-and-balances manner, is expected to act as a safeguard against the imminent "catastrophic risks" triggered by increasingly sophisticated models. OpenAI insisted that it would only roll out its technology under the assurance of safety. The newly proposed strategy involves the advisory panel scrutinizing safety reports which would then be forwarded to company executives and the OpenAI board for review. Despite the executives having the authority to make the final verdict, the latest proposal grants the board the flexibility to overturn safety decisions. This move is the aftermath of an upheaval that OpenAI underwent back in November, marked by the sudden discharge and consequent reinstatement of Sam Altman as CEO. Post Altman's re-entry into the company, OpenAI revealed its newly appointed board including Bret Taylor (Chair), Larry Summers, and Adam D'Angelo. In light of recent launches like ChatGPT in November 2022, public interest in AI has soared, in tandem with rising anxieties about its potential harm to society. Back in July, top AI developers, with participants such as OpenAI, Microsoft, Google, and Antropic, launched The Frontier Forum. This forum focuses on supervising the self-regulation introduced in crafting responsible AI. The Biden Administration also introduced an executive order in October specifying novel safety restrictions for organizations developing advanced models and executing them. Before the declaration of this executive order, leading AI developers were summoned to the White House to pledge their commitment towards creating safe and transparent AI models, with OpenAI being among the attendees.
