The company confirmed that over the past quarter, it has blocked five surreptitious initiatives aiming to employ its models for online deception.
Miscreants deployed AI to manufacture comments for publications, fabricate names and bios for social network accounts, as well as translate and edit text. OpenAI, the developers of ChatGPT, reported that an operation known as "Spamouflage" utilized their services to probe social media and produce multilingual content on platforms such as X, Medium, and Blogspot. The objective was to sway public opinion and shape political outcomes. The AI was also employed to rectify code and administer databases along with websites.
OpenAI revealed an operation named "Bad Grammar" that targeted nations like Ukraine, Moldova, the Baltic States, and the US, exploiting OpenAI models to power Telegram bots and generate politicized commentary. A collective known as the Doppelganger used AI to produce comments in various languages, post them on X and 9GAG, for the purpose of public opinion manipulation.
The company also mentioned an entity named the "International Union of Virtual Media" that leveraged AI to compose long-form articles, headlines, and web content for their associated website. Commercial firm STOIC, which utilized AI to craft articles and social media dialogue on platforms such as Instagram, Facebook, X, and related websites was also reportedly disrupted by OpenAI.
According to OpenAI, the posts by these diverse operations ranged over an assortment of topics such as the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Gaza conflict, Indian elections, western and American politics, and critiques directed at the Chinese government by Chinese dissidents and foreign administrations.
Reportedly for the first time, a leading AI firm has unveiled how its unique tools have been exploited for online duplicity. Ben Nimmo, a principal investigator at OpenAI, stated to The New York Times that their case studies showcase examples obtained from some currently active, most prevalent, and longest standing influence campaigns. OpenAI concluded that these operations did not seem to gain any meaningful audience engagement or reach due to their services.
