OpenAI Partners with Time Amidst Copyright Lawsuits and Continued Expansion

Algoine News
Summary:
OpenAI has inked a content deal with Time, allowing them to use Time's archives to train AI models. Meanwhile, they're under legal fire from the nonprofit Center for Investigative Reporting, who alleges OpenAI used copyrighted content without permission or compensation. Despite lawsuits, OpenAI is still expanding, recently procuring data analytics firm Rockset and establishing a new partnership with Time.
OpenAI has signed a multi-year content deal with Time, which will facilitate the training of OpenAI’s AI models using a century's worth of Time’s archives. However, OpenAI and its collaborator Microsoft are facing another plagiarism lawsuit for allegedly using articles without permission for previous AI training. The lawsuit has been field by the nonprofit Center for Investigative Reporting, which recently merged with the news website Mother Jones. The organization lodged the lawsuit against OpenAI on or around the 27th of June in New York, accusing OpenAI of unauthorized use of copyrighted material to train its AI models without consent or remuneration. CEO of Center for Investigative Reporting, Monica Bauerlein, highlighted the potential threat to traditional news model brought by AI-generated news, stating that the survival of their work is dependent on the recognition and support from the media consumers. Bauerlein expressed the fear that if people fail to identify Mother Jones or Reveal but only the AI tools, their relationship with their work would be affected. This suit filed by the Center for Investigative Reporting adds to the mounting legal problems for OpenAI and Microsoft, with similar accusations coming from New York Times, The New York Daily News, Chicago Tribune, Denver Post, and more. Yet, OpenAI is growing steadily and formed a new collaboration. Despite its legal woes, OpenAI continues to expand by partnering with more news media outlets and has recently purchased the data analytics company Rockset. As reported first by Axios, OpenAI has formed a strategic partnership and content licensing agreement with Time. This arrangement will grant OpenAI access to archives from Time stretching back for over a hundred years, while Time will gain AI tools and possible monetary remuneration.
