Algoine News
Summary:
OpenAI has announced the removal of Sam Altman as CEO, following the board of directors’ review process citing inconsistencies in his communication. The current CTO, Mira Murati, will step in as the interim CEO. The board has reiterated its dedication to building AI applications despite the change in leadership. Board Chairman Greg Brockman will also step down from his role but will continue as an employee. This comes amid a considerable change in OpenAI’s leadership structure, but the organization ensures that it wouldn't affect its mission to advance AI applications.
OpenAI, the builder of the ChatGPT, has recently seen the removal of its founding member Sam Altman from the CEO role, as per a statement dated Nov. 17. The current CTO, Mira Murati, has been appointed as the provisional CEO. The conclusion was arrived at following a meticulous assessment by the board of directors, finding Altman's interactions with the board lacking in consistent honesty, thus hindering their work. At the moment, Altman is unavailable for a comment. The Tweet published by OpenAI on 17th Nov 2023 reads, "OpenAI announces leadership transition https://t.co/fFYDLwGXQz". Despite the change in leadership, the board assures that its mission to advance and build AI applications is unwavering. "OpenAI's structure was intentionally designed to support our goal: the universal benefit from general artificial intelligence. We, the board, remain unwavering in our service to this mission. [...]. We confidently trust in Mira's exceptional qualifications and capability to steer OpenAI through this period of transition" states the directors. In expressing gratitude for Altman's contributions to OpenAI's foundation and expansion, the board also emphasizes a need for fresh leadership for further progression. Greg Brockman, Chairman of the board, will also step down but will continue his role within the organization, "reporting to the CEO". The directorial board comprises Adam D’Angelo, Tasha McCauley, Helen Toner, and OpenAI chief scientist Ilya Sutskever. As per the statement, equity in OpenAI is not held by most of its board members, who are independent. Taking the helm as OpenAI's interim CEO is Mira Murati, an Albanian-rooted engineer with a Dartmouth education. Recognized for her contributions to pivotal OpenAI projects as CTO, she has a diverse professional background encompassing aerospace, automotive, VR, and AR sectors. Previously a senior product manager at Tesla, she was part of the Model X project and previously collaborated with Leap Motion in integrating AI with real-world applications. Murati came on board with OpenAI in 2018. Unfortunately, Tools for Humanity, Altman's other venture and the crypto project Worldcoin did not provide a comment in response to Cointelegraph’s query.
