OpenAI Expands ChatGPT Services to Universities and Nonprofits with New Initiatives
Summary:
OpenAI has introduced two programs, 'ChatGPT Edu' and 'ChatGPT for Nonprofits', aiming to broaden its ChatGPT AI services to universities and nonprofit organizations. ChatGPT Edu is a version of the AI language model tailored for academic use, offering enterprise-level security and affordability. The chat service is already in use at universities such as Oxford, Wharton, and Columbia. OpenAI also offers a discounted rate on its ChatGPT Team service to nonprofits. Both programs provide access to the latest GPT models, collaborative workspaces, and other features. The latest GPT-4o model has been made available to unpaid users, though a paid subscription is needed to access all features.
OpenAI, a leading artificial intelligence corporation, has introduced two new programs focused on extending its ChatGPT services to academic institutions and nonprofit entities. The first offering is ‘ChatGPT Edu,’ an adjustment of the large language AI model exclusively designed to cater to the needs of university students, faculty members, researchers, and in-house operations. They've ensured this product to be cost-effective and secure for educational establishments. A blog post by the company provides an outline of the existing applications of ChatGPT at university institutions such as Oxford, Wharton, The University of Texas at Austin, Arizona State University, and Columbia University. In practice, Columbia University researchers are leveraging ChatGPT to devise measures to fend off drug overdoses. Additionally, an Assistant Professor at Arizona State University crafted a 'GPT Buddy' using the ChatGPT service to assist German language learners to practice conversationally in their downtime. Kyle Bowen, Deputy CIO at Arizona State University, showed optimism on the ChatGPT Edu offering: "Merging OpenAI's technology within our educational and operational systems expedites transformation at ASU. We are working in conjunction with our community to assimilate these tools, sharing our discoveries as a dummy-proof model for other schools.”
Moreover, OpenAI introduced a proposal to provide additional assistance and more affordable access to ChatGPT for nonprofit organizations. An offering geared towards nonprofits, registrations can get 'ChatGPT Team' service at a reduced rate of $20 monthly per user, potentially even a 50% cut for larger nonprofits ready for mass deployment.
Both 'ChatGPT Edu' and 'ChatGPT for Nonprofits' provide access to the latest models, like GPT-4o, and several services and features such as image creation, team working platforms, and custom GPTs. In a similar update, OpenAI recently provided its GPT-4o model for free to unpaying ChatGPT users to allow them to load custom GPTs, create image-based outputs such as diagrams and graphics, upload files, and incorporate web responses. However, subscription to a paid level is still necessary for users to create custom GPTs and circumnavigate messaging limitations on the GPT-4o model.
