OpenAI Co-founder Sam Altman Ousted as CEO; Mira Murati Steps In as Interim Replacement
Summary:
OpenAI co-founder Sam Altman has been removed as CEO following a board review. The board stated that Altman was not transparent enough in his communications, impacting board oversight responsibilities. Mira Murati, current CTO, will assume the role of interim CEO. Despite stepping down as board chair, Greg Brockman will remain with the company, now reporting to the CEO. The interim CEO, Mira Murati, is recognized for her contributions to OpenAI and prior executive roles in other tech companies.
As stated in a blog post dated November 17, OpenAI’s co-founder Sam Altman has been dismissed from his role as Chief Executive Officer (CEO). His position will be temporarily filled by Mira Murati, the current Chief Technology Officer (CTO). Following a detailed review process, the board found that Altman's lack of openness in his communications significantly impeded the board's oversight duties. Altman was unavailable for immediate comment.
OpenAI emphasized its ongoing dedication to the development of AI through the following statement: "OpenAI’s primary goal is to guarantee artificial general intelligence benefits everyone. Our board continues to support this vision wholeheartedly. Mira has the necessary qualifications to become the interim CEO, and we trust her leadership skills to steer OpenAI during this transitional phase."

While OpenAI acknowledged Sam Altman’s contribution to its foundation and growth, the board felt a change in leadership was required for the progression of the organization. Board Chair, Greg Brockman, will also be stepping aside. Yet, he will continue to serve the company and will report to the CEO.
The board comprises Adam D’Angelo, Tasha McCauley, Helen Toner, and Chief Scientist of OpenAI Ilya Sutskever. The blog post highlights that the majority of the board members don’t possess any equity in OpenAI, classifying them as independent directors.
Mira Murati, the appointed interim CEO, is an Albanian engineer and Dartmouth graduate well-known for her influential role in the development of OpenAI’s key products. Murati, with a diverse background that includes the aerospace, automotive, VR, and AR sectors, served as a high-ranking product manager at Tesla, where she worked on the Model X. She also worked with Leap Motion to bring AI into practical applications before joining OpenAI in 2018.
Apart from OpenAI, Altman is the founder of Tools for Humanity and the developer of the cryptocurrency project, Worldcoin. Contact was made with Tools for Humanity for a comment, but there was no response at the time of publication.
More details will be provided on this announcement as the story unfolds.
