Nvidia and NSF Collaborate on $30M AI Research Initiative; New Partnership with Equinix Announced
Summary:
Nvidia and the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) have announced a collaborative project, the National Artificial Intelligence Research Resource (NAIRR) pilot, aimed at advancing AI research. Nvidia has pledged $30 million worth of technology to the project, with the goal of expanding access to vital resources for ethical AI development. This coincides with Nvidia's announcement of a new partnership with data center operator Equinix, which will provide corporate clients with supercomputing systems.
Nvidia, a global leader in artificial intelligence (AI) chip production, along with the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF), has announced a collaborative effort aimed at advancing AI research. The National Artificial Intelligence Research Resource (NAIRR) pilot plans to expand access to essential tools for ethical AI development and innovation. Nvidia has pledged $30 million worth of its technology over the coming two years. The aim is to gather data from researchers using its platforms to increase the effectiveness of their technology, in addition to offering the NVIDIA DGX Cloud AI supercomputing resources along with NVIDIA AI Enterprise software. Ten other partners from within the U.S. government, including the National Institute of Standards and Technology and Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, are also participating in NAIRR. Sethuraman Panchanathan, NSF's director, highlighted these collaborations as proof of the "immediate need" for developing such resources for America's future AI growth, stating that investment in AI research through NAIRR boosts the U.S.' overall competitive strength. He further stated that NAIRR's ultimate ambition is to provide researchers and communities with access to computing, models, data, and software, as stated by Katie Antypas, director of the Office of Advanced Cyberinfrastructure at NSF. The initiation of this NAIRR pilot aligns with the aspirations of the executive orders concerning AI that were issued by the Biden administration in October 2023 and directed NSF to initiate a pilot for NAIRR within a trimester. Also reported recently, Nvidia revealed a fresh partnership with the data center operator Equinix on January 24, which will equip the company's clientele with supercomputing systems. Jensen Huang, NVIDIA's founder and CEO, hailed generative AI as a "game-changer across all sectors," and stated that enterprises can now own NVIDIA AI supercomputing and software, further enhanced by Equinix's operational efficiency. Equinix, located in California, ranks as a global leader in worldwide colocation data centers holding 248 centers in 31 countries spread over five continents.
