Nvidia Collaborates with Indonesian Government to Build $200M AI Hub
Summary:
Nvidia, in conjunction with the Indonesian government and PT Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison, is set to establish a $200 million AI hub in Surakarta city, Central Java. The center, which is due to begin construction this year, could serve as a telecommunications or human resource center. The move follows Nvidia's pledge to enhance Indonesia's AI talent pool through training programs. The semiconductor giant is also expanding its presence in Southeast Asia in response to increasing demand for AI tools.
Semiconductor giant Nvidia, widely recognised for its AI contributions, has joined forces with the Indonesian government and telecom provider PT Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison to establish a new AI hub in the nation. Budi Arie Setiadi, the Communication Minister, revealed on April 4 that the Surakarta city-based hub, set in the heart of the Central Java region, carries a price tag of $200 million. He further explained that the AI hub could serve as a telecommunications structure or a manpower resource center, with the commencement of construction slated for sometime this year. Surakarta Mayor Gibran Rakabuming Raka chose the city for its readiness in terms of its human resources and 5G infrastructure. Nvidia had previously committed, via a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed in January 2022 with Indonesian authorities, to provide AI training to teachers and over 20,000 university students over a five-year period, all aimed at enhancing the country’s AI talent pool. Interestingly, the MoU took place before OpenAI launched its revolutionary chatbot, ChatGPT, leading to a surge in AI interest. Since then, the AI industry has almost doubled from $134.89 billion in 2022 to $241.80 billion in 2023. Cointelegraph sought clarity from Nvidia regarding the Indonesian project. In other news, Nvidia seems to be expanding its influence in Southeast Asia, reporting record earnings due to a spike in demand for AI tools for creation. In Singapore, telecom firm Singtel worked with Nvidia to establish a new data center and collaborate on a fresh AI hub with the Singapore Institute of Technology. Other significant AI developers, such as Google and Microsoft, are injecting substantial resources into global AI projects, setting up data hubs and community training schemes in countries such as Germany, France, and Spain. This global scramble for capable AI technologies has even impacted the crypto arena, with Tether Operations Limited, the company behind the Tether stablecoin (USDT), expanding its AI concentration and beginning a recruitment drive for elite AI professionals.
