The grant eligible sectors include Agriculture, Education and Workforce, Finance, Governance, Healthcare, Utility, and Sustainability as per the scheme's official site. To receive the grant, a consortium must be formed by applicants - it should include either a tech company or startup, a Nigerian university researcher, or a foreign researcher as per the ministry's instructions.
The government recently released the Nigeria Artificial Intelligence Research Scheme to finance 45 consortiums of startups and researchers for the expansion of AI applications to improve the economy.
To qualify for the grant, candidates should submit a research proposal in alignment with the focus areas of Artificial Intelligence by the Federal Ministry of Communication, Innovation and Digital Economy. It's mandatory for the applicants to highlight the economic benefits of their project in Nigeria and show evidence of success in research or entrepreneurship. Additionally, it is expected of the applicants to publish a minimum of one peer-reviewed article within a year of receiving the grant.
Earlier in August, the government invited scientists of Nigerian descent worldwide and experts familiar with the Nigerian market to contribute to the formulation of its National Artificial Intelligence Strategy.
The application window for the grant is from Oct. 13, 2023, to Nov. 15, 2023. All the applications should be submitted via the designated online platform. The Ministry has specified that AI experts will review all the applications and those shortlisted will be notified via email and summoned for interviews.
