Nigeria invites Nigerian heritage scientists and global experts to collaborate on its National AI Strategy, aiming to address national challenges through innovative technological solutions. The government recognizes the potential of AI to drive economic expansion and societal progress. It plans to engage influential AI researchers worldwide with Nigerian roots. Additionally, the government seeks public involvement and intends to establish AI developer communities across the country to shape Nigeria's technological future.
Nigeria is seeking collaboration from both Nigerian scientists and internationally recognized experts who have experience in the Nigerian market to help develop its National Artificial Intelligence (AI) Strategy. The Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, announced this on the social media platform X. The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) has taken the lead in formulating this strategy, which aims to revolutionize technological solutions for the country's critical challenges. To achieve this, the government is reaching out to top AI researchers with Nigerian heritage from around the globe. Recognizing the transformative power of AI and its potential for societal and economic growth, the Nigerian government is committed to harnessing its benefits. A study suggests that by 2030, AI could contribute up to $15.7 trillion to the global economy, with $3 trillion coming from enhanced productivity and $9.1 trillion from innovative goods and services. A white paper titled 'Co-creating a National Artificial Intelligence Strategy for Nigeria,' mentioned in Minister Tijani's post, highlights the use of advanced machine learning models and global AI publication data to identify accomplished AI researchers with Nigerian roots. The creation of a unique research Index, similar to the "h-index," facilitated the identification of influential AI researchers of Nigerian heritage. As the initial research phase concludes, the Nigerian government seeks public involvement to ensure collective knowledge and insights are tapped into, while acknowledging the possibility of errors. Kashifu Inuwa, the Director-General of NITDA, has expressed intentions to establish AI developer communities across the country to shape Nigeria's technological future. This initiative will begin in three states in 2023 and eventually expand to include more states and local government areas.
