Through its Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, the Nigerian Federal Government has joined forces with a British computer education charity named Raspberry Pi Foundation. Their collaborative effort seeks to establish Coding Clubs for students aged between 7 and 17 years across Nigeria. The clubs, aimed at promoting computer literacy and innovation among young Nigerians, will provide extracurricular artificial intelligence (AI) programming activities. The ministry disclosed on Wednesday, November 8, that this initiative aims to familiarise participants with the field of coding and digital technology, encouraging them to apply these skills in innovative problem-solving. Initially, the Code Clubs will commence in 17 designated knowledge exchange centres and subsequently spread across the country's six geopolitical zones. Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy Minister, Bosun Tijani, took to Twitter to share the news of the ambitious partnership with Raspberry Pi Foundation, which aims to inspire young minds, boosting early exposure to technology and hence creating a talent pool in Nigeria's digital economy. This noteworthy partnership will ensure educators and participating children receive comprehensive toolkits, guidance, and support from the Raspberry Pi Foundation. Simultaneously, the ministry will manage the formation and operations of Code Clubs across the country. Moreover, individuals and organizations committed to advancing computer education, including academic institutions, will receive resources and operational assistance from an appointed central organization. The education options provided to the partners of Code Club will cover a wide array of coding and technology topics, including Robotics, Electronics, Game Development, Problem Solving, Introduction to Coding, Web Development, Programming Languages, and Project-Based Learning. In October, the Nigerian government launched a program that provides grants of 5 million naira (equivalent to $6,444) to 45 AI-focused startup companies and researchers. This was an element of the Nigeria Artificial Intelligence Research Scheme, which was recently launched to boost the widespread use of AI in contributing to economic development.
