Nigeria's Leap into the AI Field: 2023 Developments, Initiatives, and Opportunities

Algoine News
Summary:
In 2023, Nigeria significantly advanced its involvement in the field of artificial intelligence (AI). Key initiatives included implementing AI into the national education syllabus, formulating a comprehensive AI strategy, regulating data protection, and financially supporting AI startups and researchers. Despite facing challenges such as the need for a robust digital infrastructure, Nigeria is showing a strong commitment to developing AI technology and preparing future generations to handle it, demonstrating the potential for public-private collaborations in nationwide digital transformation.
There's no doubt that 2023 was dominated by advancements in artificial intelligence (AI), and Nigeria, Africa's most populous country, didn't miss out on this trend. Prior to this year, AI involvement in Nigeria had been minimal, although certain startups like Uniccon Group, responsible for Nigeria's debut humanoid robot, were beginning to explore it. Looking back over 2023, this article delves into how Nigeria approached AI, shedding light on its initiatives, regulatory actions, challenges faced and new opportunities that emerged. One significant step taken by Nigeria in the AI realm involves introducing it into the national education system. In August 2023, the government decreed that AI must be incorporated into primary school syllabi in order to cultivate a generation capable of adeptly handling AI technology. Additionally, Nigeria endeavored to map out an official strategy for AI development and implementation, calling upon Nigerian scientists and international experts experienced within the Nigerian market to collaborate in formulating a comprehensive plan. Data privacy, a critical concern with AI due to the massive volumes of data required for accurate algorithm training, was addressed in Nigerian law in June of 2023 when President Bola Ahmed Tinubu ratified the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023. This law, although not exclusively an AI regulation, is something that any AI companies looking to establish or expand their presence in Nigeria need to consider. Support for AI research and startups was demonstrated in October, when the country's government offered financial grants to 45 AI-focused startups and researchers, part of an endeavor to integrate AI solutions into the national economy. During an interview held in November, Kashifu Inuwa Abdullahi, head of Nigeria’s National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), expressed the necessity for close collaboration between NITDA, the Central Bank of Nigeria, and financial institutions to take advantage of AI and data analytics in enhancing digital payment systems. The youthful population of Nigeria was not overlooked in the drive towards an AI-equipped future. Numerous AI-related events were organized throughout the year to introduce the younger generation to the technology. There are certainly challenges to navigate in integrating AI into Nigerian society, including the need for a robust digital infrastructure capable of supporting AI applications. In terms of policy development, digital governance specialist Victor Famubode emphasizes that it is crucial for the government to effectively communicate the potential benefits and risks of AI, while also encouraging its responsible use. Although Nigeria hasn’t yet put an exhaustive AI policy into place, it has demonstrated strong interest in the technology. The country can capitalize on AI technologies in various sectors and use public-private collaborations to spearhead further innovative solutions. One such example could be a partnership with Google to train Nigerian youths in AI.
