Neal Stephenson's Lamina1 Stays Determined Amid Declining Metaverse Interest

Algoine News
Summary:
Despite declining interest in the metaverse concept, Neal Stephenson's blockchain project, Lamina1, continues its operations. The project plans to host an Open Metaverse Discovery Month event in October, offering workshops and competitions for developers and creators. Lamina1's CEO, Rebecca Barkin, remains optimistic about the metaverse's future, indicating that as long as individuals continue investing in digital experiences and technologies, the metaverse will survive.
Despite a recent decline in interest in the concept of the metaverse, Neal Stephenson's blockchain-based project remains undeterred in its efforts. Known for pioneering the term “metaverse” in the 1992 novel Snow Crash, Stephenson's project continues its mission even as 2023 sees a drop in metaverse searches according to Google Trends data. Meanwhile, critics have proclaimed the fall of the metaverse transition. Regardless, certain individuals and companies are persevering and steadily building on their vision. Lamina1, the blockchain-focused metaverse initiative started by Stephenson, will be hosting a month-long event in October titled the Open Metaverse Discovery Month. This includes workshops and group challenges to help creators and builders delve into the metaverse culture and experience. In the next few hours, the company is set to kick off an interactive workshop for Unity and Unreal Engine developers. The company is also sponsoring two Creative Competitions that aim at showcasing participant's art and experiences on the LAMINA1 Hub platform. Rebecca Barkin, CEO of Lamina1, retains a positive perspective about the future of the metaverse, despite the recent downturn in popularity and claims of its demise. Barkin has reported nearly 50,000 builders joining their community despite what some are dubbing "the death of the metaverse". She is confident that Stephenson's vision will endure as long as individuals continue investing their resources into digital experiences, game development, virtual world creation, and the digital market, among other areas. According to Barkin, Stephenson's original view of the metaverse stretches beyond just establishing virtual worlds - it also aims to challenge the dominance of corporate entities. With the advancements in technology today, Barkin argues that it grants more power to creators crossing various domains, such as entertainment, gaming, commerce, and fashion, enabling them to independently build, create, and disseminate these digital worlds.
