South Korean tech company Naver Corp has introduced its own version of OpenAI's ChatGPT, called CLOVA X, a chatbot specifically designed for Korean-language users. Yonhap, a South Korean news outlet, reported on August 24th that Naver has released its advanced hyperscale AI model named HyperCLOVA X. This flagship AI model, developed using supercomputing and data analysis capabilities, powers various AI services offered by Naver, including the new CLOVA X chatbot. Leveraging Naver's expertise in Korean language and culture, CLOVA X is similar to ChatGPT and can engage in conversations, summarize text, and generate stories, just like its English-language counterparts from Google, OpenAI, Microsoft, and Anthropic. Naver has also announced CUE, a generative AI search service powered by HyperCLOVA X. During a press conference in Seoul on August 24th, Naver CEO Choi Soo-yeon mentioned that the company has applied its technologies and experiences from different sectors, such as web search and online shopping, to enhance the technological competitiveness of their generative AI model, HyperCLOVA X. Choi added that Naver is prepared for the evolving landscape brought about by generative AI. Naver stated that beta testing for CLOVA X will commence on August 24th and the CUE search tool will be launched in September. Furthermore, Naver has made significant investments in AI, allocating $754 million over a span of five years, and is building a large data center with 600,000 servers to support its AI initiatives. According to Choi, the company aims to develop AI applications tailored for countries with political sensitivities in the Middle East and expand into non-English speaking regions like Japan and Southeast Asia. In other AI news, Nvidia reported remarkable Q2 revenue of $13.5 billion, surpassing expectations. CEO Jensen Huang mentioned that companies worldwide are adopting accelerated computing and generative AI, marking a transition from general-purpose computing.
