Nansen Crypto Platform Users Targeted in Phishing Scam; Friend.tech Denies Similar Breach

Algoine News
Summary:
Scammers are targeting Nansen crypto analytics platform users with phishing emails, promising a non-existent "Nansen Airdrop". Reportedly using leaked data from a previous third-party vendor security breach, the scammers send emails from an unrelated address, providing a link which likely leads to a fraudulent website. Friend.tech denied claims of a similar breach, clarifying leaked information had been obtained from its public API. The article concludes noting an increasing trend in substance abuse within the crypto trading community.
Scammers are targeting users of the cryptocurrency analytics tool, Nansen, with phishing emails promoting a fictitious "Nansen Airdrop" exclusive event. These underhanded activities came to light on November 23 when members of the crypto community on X (previously Twitter) spotted the burgeoning fraud operation. Dedicated crypto investigator, Officer’s Notes (Officercia), confirmed the ongoing deceptive assault, alerting the community to its existence. User data from an earlier third-party database leak is thought to be employed in this targeted scam. Nansen encountered a security lapse at one of its third-party vendors on September 22, impacting nearly 7% of its users. Information such as email addresses, password hashes, and in some cases, blockchain addresses, was made public. Nansen announced it had notified those concerned and urged them to change passwords, also confirming that wallet funds were not impacted. The phishing emails purport to come from “[email protected],”, a unrelated email address to Nansen's platform. Proposed as a limited-time offer, the scam promises a guaranteed number of bogus $Nansen tokens. The fraudsters have included a link that could potentially direct users to a rigged website, designed to dupe users into parting with sensitive information. Officercia suggests reporting any suspicious phishing links to various databases such as chainabuse.com, cryptoscamdb.org and phishtank.org, to help mitigate the effects of these types of malicious activities. Nansen has yet to make a statement on the matter to Cointelegraph. Further potential phishing victims have been exposed as user data from TrueCoin and FTX bankruptcy claims, among others, was also recently leaked. Conversely, Friend.tech firmly refuted recent allegations that its 100k+ user database had been compromised. The tech company affirmed it was tantamount to a hacking accusation based only on viewing their public Twitter feed, attributing the released information to public API scraping. This increasing worrying trend has brought attention to an alarming increase in substance abuse among the crypto trading community.
