To enrich its digital footprint and global recognition, the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) of Nigeria proposes the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into Nigeria's security architecture for enhanced results. The agency's Director-General, Kashifu Inuwa, revealed this to Cointelegraph in an exclusive meeting with the National Institute for Security Studies (NISS) Commandant, Alhaji A. S. Adeleke, who was represented by Deputy Commandant D. E. Egbeji. Inuwa underlined the diverse approaches employed by the security and IT sectors while performing their functions. He advocated that these two sectors could effectively collaborate to harness technology tools such as AI and the Internet of Things (IoT) for boosting the efficiency of the security sector. Inuwa confirmed the NITDA’s readiness to establish mutually beneficial partnerships, emphasizing that this alliance between IT and security sectors aligns perfectly with NITDA Strategic Roadmap and Action Plan (SRAP 2.0). This is pivotal to the pillar stressing strategic partnerships and collaborations. In November 2023, the NITDA promoted collaboration between itself, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), and financial institutions, emphasizing the importance of using emerging technologies like AI and data analysis to deepen digital transactions. On the subject of AI, Inuwa highlighted that AI is a global driving force. He dispelled misconceptions and underscored its role in simplifying tasks, providing swift responses, and proposing solutions. In reaction to the discussions, NISS Commandant Alhaji A.S Adeleke expressed an eagerness to draw from the NITDA's experiences. According to Adeleke, the aim of the NISS is to secure vital insights for an executive summary to be presented to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR, with the intent to assist in forming and executing policies. NITDA is paving the way for AI development in Nigeria through initiatives such as the National Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Robotics (NCAIR) and the formulation of the National Artificial Intelligence Policy. In a recent move, the Nigerian government unveiled grants of 5 million naira ($6,444) to 45 AI-centered startups and researchers as part of the new Nigeria Artificial Intelligence Research Scheme. This effort aims to promote the widespread use of AI to spur economic progress.
