NFIB Blocks 43 Fraudulent Websites, Crypto Community Continues Fight Against Phishing

Algoine News
Summary:
The National Fraud Intelligence Bureau (NFIB) has blocked 43 websites tied to fraudulent activities, including a fake email address pretending to be the cryptocurrency site blockchain.com. This comes as part of its efforts to tackle cybercrime related to fraud and finance. The Bureau urges victims to report via official channels and reveals that it has removed nearly 300,000 malicious websites as of December 2023. The crypto community continues to battle widespread phishing issues, as exemplified by the security breach at hardware wallet manufacturer Trezor, affecting 66,000 users, and a large-scale phishing campaign targeting crypto investors.
In their ongoing efforts against fraudulent activity, the National Fraud Intelligence Bureau (NFIB), a police department specializing in the analysis and collection of cybercrime intelligence related to fraud and finance, has successfully shut down 43 websites associated with deceptive activities. The office of the temporary commissioner for the City of London Police, Pete O’Doherty, provided details showing that the NFIB discovered a fake email address masquerading as the cryptocurrency website blockchain.com among others. Investigations also uncovered 42 additional websites, including those named “actionfraud.info” and “department-fraud.com”, which have subsequently been blocked. The Bureau has encouraged victims of cybercrime to make their reports through the official channels and hotline. Based on the reports, as of December 2023, the Bureau was able to dismantle almost 300,000 malicious websites. There has been a noticeable increase in phishing scams, one such example being emails falsely claiming the recipient has won a “36-piece Tupperware set”. Within the cryptocurrency community, phishing continues to be a widespread problem. Earlier this year on January 20, Trezor, a manufacturer of hardware wallets, suffered a security breach, compromising the data of 66,000 users. Post-incident, at least 41 users reported phishing attempts trying to obtain their sensitive information to access their cryptocurrency wallets. Between January 20 and 23, a large-scale phishing campaign targeted the email addresses of many cryptocurrency investors. An email attack, pretending to be notifications of fake token airdrops from renowned Web3 companies, took the crypto community by surprise. Several leading companies like Cointelegraph, WalletConnect, and Token Terminal were impersonated in this scam. Subsequent insights revealed that this phishing attack resulted from a breach at the email marketing company MailerLite. As per the firm's findings, a staff member inadvertently provided attackers access to MailerLite's admin panel while responding to a customer request via a fraudulent Google sign-in page. Nansen, a blockchain analytics firm, confirmed that the wallet associated with the attackers had received upwards of $3.3 million since the attack.
