NEAR and Polygon Developers Collaborate to Build Zero-Knowledge Prover for WASM Blockchains
Summary:
NEAR and Polygon network developers are collaboratively building a zero-knowledge prover, zkWASM, for Web Assembly blockchains, set to launch next year. This development marks the first integration of WASM-focused networks into the Polygon ecosystem, providing greater scalability and increased decentralization. Once completed, the prover will be implemented into Polygon's chain development kit, thereby allowing developers to create custom blockchain networks. The zkWASM prover will enhance validator efficiency on the NEAR network, improve liquidity, and allow for deeper integration with Ethereum.
In a shared statement released November 8, the creators of the NEAR and Polygon networks have disclosed their collaboration on the production of a zero-knowledge prover, known as "zkWASM", designed specifically for Web Assembly (WASM) blockchains. This revolutionary prover marks the first time WASM-focused networks can integrate into the Polygon ecosystem.
WASM, which serves as a binary instruction format, originated for usage within web browsers. It has since also found utility within some blockchain networks as a computational device, replacing the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM). Examples of such networks include NEAR, Stellar, Polkadot, and Internet Computer.
Per the statement, the zkWASM prover is currently being vigorously developed with plans for release next year. Upon completion, it will be twinned with Polygon's chain development kit (CDK), offering developers the ability to establish custom blockchain networks according to their specified preconditions. Thanks to CDK, developers will also be able to create WASM networks and assimilate them into the wider Polygon ecosystem, which includes the Ethereum mainnet.
NEAR's co-founder, Illia Polosukhin, alluded that the zkWASM prover would usher in a deeper integration with Ethereum, enhancing user liquidity. He said, "NEAR's closer integration with Ethereum, via the exploration of new research vistas, combined with NEAR and Polygon's shared specialty will broaden the ZK terrain and interconnect liquidity across chains."
The shared statement also specified that zkWASM will augment validator efficiency, most notably on the NEAR network. Since the zero-knowledge proof procedure will reduce computational overhead relative to current shard validation efforts, the NEAR network is set to benefit from superior scalability alongside increased decentralization.
Polygon is in the process of constructing a multi-chain ecosystem dubbed "Polygon 2.0". This upgraded system will encompass bridges utilizing zero-knowledge proofs for the transfer of assets between chains. In September, Polygon's developers disclosed plans to substitute the network's incumbent native currency, MATIC, with a revamped coin, "POL".
