Mira Murati Steps Up As Interim CEO of OpenAI After Unexpected Exit of Founder Sam Altman

Algoine News
Summary:
OpenAI’s board has replaced founder Sam Altman with Mira Murati as interim CEO, stirring backlash from clients and investors. Murati, involved with OpenAI since 2018 and pivotal in its transformation from nonprofit to business, previously held positions at Goldman Sachs, Zodiac Aerospace, and Tesla. She has championed several foundational OpenAI projects like DALL-3, Whisper, and GPT-4. Murati has been silent since the shake-up at OpenAI and her last social media activity noticed was contesting the release of the ChatGPT Turbo.
In a surprise upheaval that rocked the tech arena, OpenAI's board removed its founder, Sam Altman, from his position on November 17. Mira Murati, a valuable member of OpenAI since 2018, has been chosen to take up the role of interim CEO. The sudden restructuring has sparked significant backlash from the startup's key clients and investors. A Bloomberg piece disclosed that there have been initiatives involving Microsoft, OpenAI's largest stakeholder, to reinstate Altman as the chief executive. Murati, who joined the team when OpenAI was still a nonprofit research facility, has been instrumental in the morphing of the company into a global powerhouse behind the chatbot, ChatGPT. Before serving at OpenAI, Murati reportedly spent some time as an analyst at Goldman Sachs, with subsequent engineering roles at companies like Zodiac Aerospace and Tesla, as per her now non-existent LinkedIn profile. In 2016, she supposedly was appointed as VP of product and engineering at Ultraleap. At OpenAI, she started her journey as the VP of applied AI and partnerships, and steadily made her way up to senior VP of research, product and partnerships. Eventually, she was instated as the CTO in the year 2022. Holding an Albanian birthright and holding a degree from the prestigious Dartmouth College, Murati positions herself as a 'product centric' person. She strongly opines that AI must transcend the boundaries of research projects. In her interaction with TIME Magazine earlier in the year, she emphasized the importance of including diverse expert voices like social scientists, philosophers, artists, and humanities professionals. She affirms that regulators must certainly be a part of this conversation. Birthed from Murati's strategic thought process and meticulous execution, several landmark OpenAI projects like DALL-3, an image-generator model, Whisper, a speech-recognition tool, and the latest chatbot iteration GPT-4, have seen the light of day. Her social media presence, exclusively on X (previously known as Twitter), reveals her deep involvement in product development at OpenAI. Ever since the latest chain of events at OpenAI, Murati hasn't made a public statement. She has deactivated her LinkedIn profile, and her last social media post was seen on November 6, marking the launch of ChatGPT Turbo.
