In a new decade-long strategic alliance, tech giant Microsoft and UK telecom firm Vodafone unveiled plans to incorporate advanced artificial intelligence (AI) and other technologies. The companies announced on January 17, that in this collaboration, Vodafone intends to invest approximately $1.5 billion in the forthcoming 10 years to adopt cloud and Microsoft-developed customer-centred AI services. Microsoft, on the other hand, seeks to benefit from Vodafone's broadband and mobile connectivity services. The partnership intends to leverage generative AI to revolutionize the customer interaction experience with Vodafone via Microsoft's generative AI tools. Microsoft Azure OpenAI will be used across all Vodafone customer interaction points, encompassing TOBi, its digital assistant available in 13 serviced countries. Vodafone's vast employee base will also benefit from Microsoft’s AI tool Copilot, enabling work transformation, productivity enhancement, and an overall digital efficiency surge. Expressing enthusiasm about employing the latest cloud, Microsoft's chairman and CEO Satya Nadella stated that AI technology would improve the customer experience for hundreds of millions of Vodafone's clients across Europe and Africa. He believes this new AI wave will create enormous opportunities for organizations and industries worldwide. As per Vodafone, it will build AI integrations adhering to impartial privacy and ethical security norms within its existing set responsible AI guidelines. In an attempt to gain more insights into the matter, Vodafone has been approached for further comments. Outside of AI, the alliance also aims at boosting Vodafone's Internet of Things (IoT) connectivity platform on a larger scale and create new digital and financial amenities. The focus will be on nurturing small and medium-sized businesses in Europe and Africa. This announcement comes shortly after Microsoft introduced its updated version of Copilot on January 15. Priced at $20 per month, the premium version promises to offer 'business-level' features including custom GPTs and Office integration to users. Speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, Nadella called the company’s association with OpenAI a “no-brainer” indicating a constructive rivalry in the AI industry.
