In a move to expand its artificial intelligence (AI) product portfolio, tech giant Microsoft has teamed up with Indian startup Sarvam AI. On February 8, Microsoft revealed that it plans to incorporate Sarvam’s Indic voice large language model (LLM) into its Azure AI platform. Microsoft's Azure OpenAI and Machine Learning tools will provide Sarvam with the capabilities to optimize its LLMs, hastening their training and expansion. The initiative is part of Microsoft's dedication to advancing growth and innovation in India using AI. Microsoft India and South Asia president, Puneet Chandok, expressed the company's aim to assist India in transitioning into an "AI-first nation.” He affirmed that Microsoft is not only promoting domestic innovation but is also facilitating an environment where every person, regardless of language or background, enjoys the advantages of voice-driven AI solutions. Sarvam’s LLM is tailored to accommodate Indic languages and context, allowing the creation and implementation of generative AI applications to be more accurate and economical in India. Initially, the LLM will offer a natural voice interface in Hindi, India’s most widely spoken language with around 609 million speakers. Microsoft stated that voice interfaces are the optimal interfaces for AI apps in Indian languages. The collaboration also intends to support local businesses in rapidly and ethically adopting generative AI. Over the past year, AI technology has been central to Microsoft’s overall growth and development strategy, with an 18% increase in its year-end earnings, attributed to the infusion of AI across its entire tech stack. Simultaneously, Microsoft's worth surpassed $3 trillion, overtaking Apple as the most valuable publicly listed company. Recently, Microsoft also announced collaborations with telecom company Vodafone and the American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL-CIO) in the U.S. for worker-centric AI development.
