Microsoft Introduces 'Recall', a New AI-Enabled Feature for Windows 11 PCs

Algoine News
Summary:
Microsoft has revealed a new AI-enabled feature named "Recall" for select Windows 11 PCs that maintains a record of user activity. Set to be available on the new "Copilot+ PCs", the feature uses AI to take periodic screenshots of user interaction, providing a 'photographic memory' of computer usage. Concerns over privacy issues regarding the use of personal data to train AI models have been raised. This feature draws comparisons to the technology displayed in a "Black Mirror" episode.
Microsoft has introduced a novel functionality named "Recall" for certain models of Windows 11 PCs. This Artificial Intelligence-enabled attribute meticulously records data on activities performed by a user on their device, covering every aspect of on-screen engagement. The AI-based innovation is set to be incorporated into Microsoft's newly launched "Copilot+ PCs," as detailed in a corporate blog post on May 20 by Microsoft's Executive Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer for Consumers, Yusuf Mehdi. Mehdi defines this functionality as providing a 'photographic memory' to computers by utilizing AI to periodically screenshot user operations, documenting real-time tasks conducted on their devices. He pointed out the common, daily struggle of locating something one has accessed previously on the PC. "Copilot+ PCs structure information in a similar way to that of human cognitive behavior—forming associations and relationships unique to our individual experiences" he further elaborated. This can assist users in revisiting items of interest and easily locate them using the cues recollected. As showcased in a demonstration video by Microsoft, Recall allows users to browse through a visual timeline of content spanning applications, websites, or documents previously accessed. The feature employs object recognition from prior content snapshots to suggest actions. It provides users with control over privacy, enabling them to delete distinct snapshots, modify time spans, halt the recording, or exclude certain apps and websites from being logged. The feature draws parallels to technology portrayed in a British sci-fi anthology series called Black Mirror, where characters can replay their memories. The match was acknowledged by billionaire businessman Elon Musk, who posted on social media platform X on May 21, likening the feature to an episode from the series. However, apprehensions have been voiced regarding Recall's generative AI, with some individuals expressing worry that their private data could be exploited without permission to finesse the company's AI algorithms as reported by international digital content publication network 80 Level. Earlier on May 17, Cointelegraph had reported potential action against Microsoft including a fine of up to 1% of its yearly returns within the European Union, if it fails to respond to an information request linked to Microsoft's search engine Bing and its associated generative AI services.
