As per Suleyman, these future hires will be invited to solve some of the most "provocative and difficult AI questions" of our times. Suleyman, who was brought on board on March 19 to spearhead AI strategies, is a co-founder of DeepMind, an AI start-up acquired by Google in 2014. His pronouncements were made as part of the declared formation of the AI hub in the UK. The hub's core mission is to upscale AI language models and their foundation. It aspires to develop tools for foundation models and work synergistically with international AI teams and partners like OpenAI. The tech community warmly welcomed the move. Neil Cameron, on X, celebrated the progression as a "tremendous victory for the UK ecosystem". Tom Tugendhat, representative of the UK Parliament, interpreted it as a display of trust in the UK's prowess as a worldwide hub for AI. Relatedly, UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak recognized the prospects of AI and regarded it as instrumental to his legacy. In a statement given on October 26, Sunak conveyed his faith in AI technology's transformative power, rating it alongside milestones such as the industrial revolution, the advent of electricity, and the genesis of the internet. In a related development, Canada's AI industry is also set to flourish. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau earmarked a $1.76 billion budget on April 7 to bolster the country's AI industry and uphold its global competitiveness.
