Meta to Implement New Norms for AI-Generated Content Across Its Platforms

Algoine News
Summary:
Meta is set to introduce new guidelines for AI-generated content on its platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and threads. Identified AI-content will be tagged, and users will have the option to flag suspected AI-generated content. The company is collaborating with tech giants such as Google, OpenAI, Microsoft, Adobe, Midjourney, and Shutterstock to advance detection methods for invisible watermarks in AI-generated content. However, the ability to detect AI-generated audio and video content, including deepfakes, is currently beyond Meta's reach.
In the coming months, Meta is set to introduce new guidelines pertaining to content produced by Artificial Intelligence (AI) on its various platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and threads, as detailed in a company blog entry dated January 6th. Content will be tagged visibly if it's identified as being created by AI, based on its metadata or deliberate watermarking. Meta users will also be granted the capacity to flag any unmarked content presumed to be generated by AI. Echoing earlier content moderation policies of Meta, this update reminds us of a time when the corporation, formerly known as Facebook, established a system that allowed users to report content that contravened the rules of the platform. Fast forward to 2024, and Meta is providing tools once again to its users across all its social media handles to flag inappropriate content, harnessing potentially the world's largest consumer crowd-sourcing force. This meant that content creators would be obligated to label their creations as AI-generated whenever necessary, otherwise there might be repercussions. As per the blog, there will be requirements for users to disclose and label any organic content accompanied by a photorealistic video or realistic-sounding audio that was digitally altered or created, failure to do so would invite penalties. Interestingly, any AI-generated content created using Meta's in-built tools would receive a watermark along with a clear label indicating its origin. However, not all AI systems come with these safeguards. The company is engaged in collaborative projects with other firms like Google, OpenAI, Microsoft, Adobe, Midjourney, and Shutterstock to evolve methods for large-scale detection of invisible watermarks. But, these methods might only be applicable for AI-generated images. As stated in the blog, "Although there are emerging indicators in their image generators, they haven't evolved to include them in AI tools that create audio and video content on the same scale." This signifies that at present, Meta might not be equipped to detect AI-generated audio and video, including deepfake technology, on a large scale.
