Meta announces Meta AI, a versatile, AI-powered assistant for its platforms and devices
Summary:
At the Meta Connect event on September 27, CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced Meta AI, a new AI assistant set to integrate with platforms including Instagram, Facebook, WhatsApp, and future mixed reality devices. Built on Meta's language model Llama 2 and developed with Microsoft Bing, this assistant aims to serve diverse needs across various platforms and is designed not only to provide information but also to generate images and offer conversational, entertainment-oriented interaction. The AI will also feature in new products like the upcoming smart glasses and Quest 3 VR device.
During the Meta Connect event on September 27, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced the creation of the company's latest artificial intelligence assistant, Meta AI. This smart assistant, which aims to answer to OpenAI's ChatGPT, will find its application across Instagram, Facebook, WhatsApp, and eventually, the company's virtual and augmented reality devices. Zuckerberg explained that Meta AI is built upon their own expansive language model, Llama 2, and was developed in collaboration with Microsoft Bing to grant users the benefit of accessing real-time online information. He described Meta AI as a basic chat bot that users can converse with as though it were another person.
Apart from offering answers to queries and facilitating chats with users, Meta AI is capable of crafting images, courtesy of a new image generation instrument named Emu. This tool has been educated on over a billion pieces of data such as photos and captions, shared by Instagram and Facebook users.
Rather than aiming at a one-size-fits-all solution like competitor ChatGPT, Zuckerberg stressed that Meta AI sets itself apart by its core strategy of developing different AI solutions for different uses. Using various social media apps of the company as examples, Zuckerberg demonstrated how Meta AI could provide a tailored experience for each platform, such as aiding with travel planning within Facebook Messenger group chats.
Not just meant to convey useful information, Meta's chatbots are also designed for conversational and recreational utility. As proof of their entertainment features, Meta also revealed a suite of chatbots inspired by around 30 celebrities, like Paris Hilton, Snoop Dogg, and ex-NFL player Tom Brady.
Starting from September 27, the AI assistant, Meta AI, will be accessible to a finite group of American users on platforms like Facebook Messenger, Instagram, and WhatsApp. Additionally, the AI assistant will feature in the new suite of smart glasses scheduled for distribution on October 17, and the upcoming Quest 3 VR device, all targeted towards a US audience.
Concurrently on the day of Meta's announcement, OpenAI announced that ChatGPT will not be confined to data predating 2021. With the new rollout, Plus and Enterprise users utilizing the GPT-4 model will be granted immediate access to the update. Previous versions of ChatGPT were plagued by a widening knowledge gap due to the nature of AI training models like generative pre-trained transformers (GPT), limiting their knowledge base to data up until 2021 - most likely the year it was finalized for mass production.
