Meta Progressing on Developing Consumer Neural Interfaces, Zuckerberg Reveals

Algoine News
Summary:
Meta's CEO Mark Zuckerberg has revealed advancements in the development of consumer neural interfaces, wearable devices that interpret brain signals to control computers. The interfaces, to be worn on the wrist, will interpret neural signals highlighting subtle hand movements. This follows discussions in 2021 over "wrist-based interaction." The wristband, operating on electromyography principles, might become a consumer product in a few years, working in tandem with Meta’s Ray-Ban augmented reality smart glasses. Meanwhile, the US is forming legislation for neurotech privacy protection, and Meta has unveiled a new version of Meta AI, set to receive the state-of-the-art Llama 3 AI model upgrade.
Mark Zuckerberg, Meta's CEO, conveyed the company's advancement in the development of their premier consumer-grade neural interfaces. These devices, contrary to being invasive, are wearable contraptions capable of decoding brain signals for computer control. Zuckerberg highlighted that the exciting interfaces will not directly connect to the brain, but instead, are wrist wearables that interpret subtle hand movements through neural signals that the brain transmits. Meta initiated talks about this "wrist-based interaction" development as a part of the Facebook Reality Labs Research back in March 2021. Meta's wristband operates on the principles of electromyography (EMG), deciphering the brain's desired hand signals and converting them into device-controlling commands. In an interview with tech entrepreneur and YouTuber Roberto Nickson on April 18, Zuckerberg stated, “These devices can interpret the signals to control eyeglasses or any other computer device. Though the initial product version is not yet on the market, internal testing has proved to be interesting and highly exciting." Earlier this year, the Meta CEO suggested that this neural wristband, through the aid of AI technology, could become a consumer product in a few years, overcoming the constraints posed by camera-based gesture tracking. Meta also envisions integrating these neural interfaces with their Ray-Ban augmented reality smart glasses. Regarding the smart glasses design, Zuckerberg dubbed the "hero feature" to be AI integration, enabling a multi-modal AI that responds to textual or vocal queries while considering the surrounding environment. In related developments, government authorities in the U.S are drafting legislation for neurotech privacy protection. The Protect Privacy of Biological Data Act, expanding the sensitive data definition to include biological and neural data, was passed in Colorado recently. Moreover, Meta recently launched a new version of its inter-application and glasses operating assistant, Meta AI. Meta AI is set to receive an upgrade with the innovative Llama 3 AI model, which, as Zuckerberg stated, will be open-sourced.
