Meta Plans to Launch Second-Generation 'Artemis' Chip to Boost AI Capabilities
Summary:
Meta plans to launch a second-generation of an in-house semiconductor chip, known as "Artemis," in 2024 to enhance its artificial intelligence capabilities. This move will help Meta reduce operational and energy costs and decrease reliance on chips from Nvidia. The report also mentioned other tech companies like OpenAI and Microsoft, which are considering or have developed their own AI chips.
Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, is preparing to roll out a new iteration of a proprietary semiconductor chip in its data centers to bolster artificial intelligence (AI) research and development. A report by Reuters, citing an internal document, disclosed that Meta is gearing up to launch a second generation version of an in-house chip, coined as "Artemis." This move aims to augment their computing prowess to manage more robust generative AI applications. The Artemis chip operates similarly to its predecessor, specializing in "inference," where models employ their algorithm to shape decisions and responses based on user directions. A company spokesperson affirmed that a revised chip would commence operation in 2024 and work in concert with "hundreds of thousands of off-the-shelf GPUs" that Meta had previously procured. “Our internally developed accelerators complement commercially available GPUs perfectly, delivering an optimal blend of performance and efficiency tailored for Meta-specific workloads,” stated the spokesperson. Mark Zuckerberg, Meta’s CEO, disclosed last month that the company expects to purchase 350,000 leading-edge "H100" processors from Nvidia by year-end. A chip of this kind self-produced by Meta would decrease operational and energy expenditures while reducing the company's exclusive reliance on Nvidia chips. Nvidia, a leading power in the semiconductor chip market, powers state-of-the-art AI models. The company reported a historic $18 billion in Q3 revenue last November, primarily driven by generative AI. Nvidia's market cap stands at a staggering $1.56 trillion, and it plans to broaden its reach in China with a new chip and establish a center in Vietnam. Creating their chips in-house is also on the radar of other tech giants like OpenAI, the inventor of the well-known chatbot ChatGPT. They stated last October that they were considering acquiring a chip-making company to make AI chips. In January 2024, OpenAI's CEO, Sam Altman, said they intend to secure funding to set up a chain of semiconductor manufacturing facilities. Last November, Microsoft unveiled its chip, "Maia," labeling it the final component for infrastructure systems fashioned for AI tasks and generative AI.
