Meta Developing Powerful AI Model to Rival OpenAI, Plans for Open-Source Release

Algoine News
Summary:
Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, is developing a powerful artificial intelligence (AI) model to rival OpenAI. The new AI will be open-source and allow other companies to leverage its advanced text generation and analysis capabilities. Meta is building data centers and acquiring high-performance chips for the project. Training for the model will begin in early 2024, with a release expected next year. This development reflects the growing competition among tech giants and governments to control and deploy advanced AI systems.
Meta, the parent company of popular social media platforms Facebook and Instagram, is reportedly working on a new artificial intelligence (AI) that aims to compete with OpenAI's most advanced model. According to sources familiar with the matter, Meta intends for this new AI to be significantly more powerful than its previously released Llama 2 model. The company plans to make the system open-source, allowing other companies to leverage its capabilities for generating text and performing high-level analysis. In order to support this endeavor, Meta has been building data centers and acquiring Nvidia's H100 semiconductor chips, known for their power and desirability. While Llama was trained on 70 billion parameters, the parameters for OpenAI's GPT-4, which is estimated to be around 1.5 trillion, have yet to be disclosed. Meta aims to commence training for the large language model (LLM) in early 2024 and release it sometime next year, following the anticipated launch of Google's LLM Gemini. Unlike the collaboration between Meta and Microsoft that made Llama 2 available on Azure, Meta plans to train its upcoming model on its own infrastructure. This development takes place amidst a global race among major tech companies and governments to create, deploy, and control advanced AI systems. The United Kingdom government recently announced a $130 million investment in high-powered chips for AI, while China has implemented new legislation regulating AI and witnessed the release of over 70 AI models by companies like Baidu.
