McDonald’s has unveiled a new metaverse project, 'My Happy Place,' for residents of Singapore, providing a platform for virtual burger creation and more. McDonald’s Singapore collaborated with Bandwagon Labs, the metaverse division of technology-focused entertainment company Bandwagon, to develop this online world for its customers. Clarence Chan, Bandwagon Labs' founder, told Cointelegraph that three main elements made up the McDonald’s metaverse experience: multiplayer interaction, creative expression, and daily challenges with rewards.
To enhance security, functionality, and the ownership of digital collectibles, the application integrates Web3 technologies. "Integrating services like MetaMask, we help secure your identity authentication and facilitate activities within the metaverse that are token-gated," explained Chan.
According to the official announcement, McDonald’s metaverse, which will run from June 6 to July 7, is fully operated by the fast-food giant. Its success will decide whether the project continues or is further developed. Chan, who personally experienced the metaverse potential by getting married there, stated that despite the potential for customer retention and fan engagement, metaverses are often hampered by third-party hosting and lack tangible rewards.
However, Bandwagon Labs has addressed these issues for McDonald's, according to Chan. “Our platform encourages social interaction and participation, leading to physical prizes such as fries”, he concluded.
In related news, Magic Leap has disclosed a strategic partnership with Google to develop advanced reality technologies. Magic Leap's advancements in optics and Google's infrastructure will be highlighted according to a statement by Magic Leap CTO Julie Larson-Green. There was no mention of specific products or potential services in the press release.
