Mark Cuban Loses Gmail Access in Hoax Call, Months After $800K Crypto Wallet Hack
Summary:
Billionaire investor Mark Cuban admits that he lost access to his Gmail following a scam call, warning his followers of any emails coming from his account. This incident occurs just a few months after over $800,000 was taken from his cryptocurrency wallet due to supposed hacking. Many in the crypto community speculated about the unread emails and potential security breach. This fall out comes amidst Cuban's active advocacy for improved cryptocurrency regulations in the U.S.
Noted billionaire and investor Mark Cuban has shared that he has lost access to his Gmail due to a scam phone call. His loss of access comes just mere months after over $800,000 were siphoned off his cryptocurrency wallet. "On June 22, I was victim to hacking of my [email protected] as a person identified as Noah made a call from the number 650-203-0000 and convinced me of an intruder by faking Google's recovery methods," Cuban expressed in a post on X. This modus operandi typically involves tricking users for their private details or account logins by pretending to be an official representative of Google.
He cautioned his 8.8 million followers on X if any emails were received from [email protected] on or after 3:30pm PST it would not be from him. Reactions from the crypto world were a mix of support and speculation about unread emails he might pile up during this period of having no access.
Nick Percoco, Chief Security Officer of the crypto exchange Kraken, asked Cuban, once he regained access, to share a screenshot of unread emails, speculating it could easily be a 5-digit number. There were also speculations whether Cuban's X account had been compromised. "Is it possible that his X account has also been hacked, and they are trying to extract more information?" questioned user "Mickamious".
This comes after an event nine months ago where Cuban's hot wallet was mysteriously emptied of nearly $870,000. The suspicion is hackers who might have been laying in wait for him to log in to MetaMask after a prolonged gap of months. In September 2023, the first to bring attention to this hack was independent blockchain detective Wazz, when they picked up dubious activity concerning one of Cuban's wallets that the 65-year-old hadn't used for approximately five months.
As an aside, Cuban has been actively pushing for a better cryptocurrency regulation landscape in the U.S. Recently, he advocated for regulation of "all crypto" by the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) over the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).
