Major Bitcoin App Wallet of Satoshi Disappears from US App Stores
Summary:
The Wallet of Satoshi (WoS), a major Bitcoin Lightning payments app, has abruptly vanished from the Apple App Store and Google Play Store in the United States. The crypto community noticed this withdrawal amid the app approaching a November milestone of 1 million transactions. Kevin Rooke, an industry authority, highlighted that WoS is set for the biggest monthly volume of Lightning transactions ever. The WoS app, however, remains available on Australian and Singapore's app platforms. As yet, neither Apple nor WoS have responded to elaborate further on the matter.
The Wallet of Satoshi (WoS), a popular application facilitating Bitcoin (BTC) Lightning payments, has been taken down from both Apple's App Store and Google's Play Store in the United States. This comes as WoS is nearing the milestone of 1 million transactions for November. The crypto community, along with multiple users, first noticed its disappearance from the app stores on November 24, while attempting to search for the app. They either found no relevant results or were directed to other competing wallet applications.
Contrastingly, the WoS app was still available for download on Australian versions of both Apple's App Store and Google's Play Store as well as Singapore's Google Play Store at the time of report. When attempting to search for Wallet of Satoshi on Apple's U.S. App Store, no results were returned.
Kevin Rooke, a renowned industry author and podcaster, highlighted the potential of Wallet of Satoshi processing over 1.1 million Lightning payments this November. According to him, with these figures, it would be the largest monthly volume of Lightning payments ever facilitated by the platform.
As of yet, neither Apple nor Wallet of Satoshi has responded to requests for further details. It is worth noting that Apple charges a significant 30% fee for in-app transactions, a characteristic that often poses challenges for crypto platforms seeking presence on the App Store. Additionally, a recent class-action lawsuit against the tech giant was filed by a group of disgruntled users of PayPal's Venmo and Block Cash App. They claimed Apple engaged in anti-competitive agreements to restrict the application of crypto technology on its platform.
Apple's history with crypto apps include the removal of the Damus app based on Nostr because of a Bitcoin tip feature in June. Furthermore, MetaMask's wallet app was momentarily taken down from its App Store in October.
