In his latest series of essays on artificial intelligence (AI), former OpenAI safety researcher Leopold Aschenbrenner heavily focuses on artificial general intelligence (AGI). Titled "Situational Awareness," the series provides an overview of current AI technologies and their profound potential for the upcoming ten years. The entire series, which spans 165 pages, was updated on June 4th. The essays particularly spotlight AGI, a type of AI that has the ability to meet or even exceed human functionality in a variety of cognitive tasks. AGI is one of several diffferent AI categories, including Artificial Narrow Intelligence (ANI) and Artificial Super-intelligence (ASI). Aschenbrenner states that seeing AGI by 2027 is remarkably plausible. He forecasts that AGI machines will surpass the capabilities of college graduates by 2025 or 2026. As he puts it, AGI machines will become more intelligent than people by the end of the decade, leading to real super-intelligence. This path to AGI, he anticipates, will lead to significant national security implications. According to Aschenbrenner, AI systems may potentially develop intellectual abilities equal to a professional computer scientist's. He also boldly speculates that AI laboratories will be capable of training a generalized language model within mere minutes. His perspective is that in 2027, a pioneering AI lab could train a GPT-4-level model in just one minute. Aschenbrenner encourages accepting the reality of AGI, predicting its success. In his opinion, the most intelligent minds in the AI industry have adopted a standpoint of 'AGI realism,' based on three core principles related to the United States' national security and AI evolution. Aschenbrenner's AGI series follows alleged instances of information leaks that led to his departure from OpenAI. It's also reported that he was aligned with OpenAI's chief scientist, Ilya Sutskever, who attempted to remove OpenAI's CEO, Sam Altman, in 2023. Aschenbrenner's newest works are dedicated to Sutskever. Most recently, Aschenbrenner founded an investment company focusing on AGI, with significant investments from figures like Patrick Collison, the CEO of Stripe. In other news, cryptocurrency voters are reportedly already causing a stir in the 2024 elections, a trend that is anticipated to persist.
