Italian Privacy Regulator Launches Probe into AI Data Gathering Practices

Algoine News
Summary:
The Italian Data Protection Authority has initiated an investigation into data gathering used for training AI algorithms, focusing on the implementation of sufficient security measures to prevent 'web scraping' of personal data. Invitations have been sent to industry experts and academics to share their views over the next 60 days. The probe follows previous actions from Italian regulators in response to AI-related issues as well as a recent agreement between Italy, France, and Germany on future AI regulations.
Italy's Privacy Regulator has initiated a probe on November 22 to inspect the activity of data accumulation for training AI algorithms, this was officially declared by the Italian Data Protection Authority. The examination is designed to validate the incorporation of sufficient protective standards on both public and private websites to curb the incidence of 'web scraping'. This term refers to the extraction of personal information used in AI training through third-party collaboration from the companies manufacturing the AI algorithms. The Italian regulator clarified that this investigative process would apply to all, whether public or private, who function as data control operators established in Italy or providing services to Italy, making personal data freely available online. The regulator refrained from naming any specific firms but implied that several AI platforms are known to scrape the web collecting extensive personal data. The regulator mentioned that following the probe, they would not hesitate to implement actions urgently if required. Earlier this year, Google faced a class-action lawsuit in the United States concerning its renewed AI data-scraping privacy policy over all its web services for AI training. The Italian regulatory body invited contributions from professionals in the AI field, academics, and others connected with the industry. These individuals have been invited to share their insight or commentary for up to 60 days. Back in March 2023, the Italian privacy authority was among the first to stringently examine AI-related issues. Consequently, they had prohibited the popular AI chatbot, ChatGPT, from operating in Italy due to privacy violation allegations. By May, millions of euros were assigned by Italy to a specially arranged fund to support workers who might lose their jobs to AI. Recently, a mutual understanding on future AI regulation was reached between Italy, France, and Germany, as per a collective document reviewed by Reuters. This arrangement is predicted to assist in facilitating similar discussions on a pan-European level. These three nations endorsed the idea of setting up voluntary commitments for AI providers of different scales within the European Union. In related news, the EasyTranslate boss commented:' AI has killed the industry'.
