Investor Loses Over $100K in Crypto Assets Despite Robust Security Measures

Algoine News
Summary:
Investor Matthias Mende has reported the loss of over $100,000 in crypto assets despite having robust security measures in place. The co-founder of the Dubai Blockchain Center and originator of the Bonuz project even had his Solana Name Service domains taken. Shocked by the theft, Mende is working with Dubai's cybercrime unit and forensic experts to retrieve the stolen assets and has urged the unknown hacker to return the stolen funds or face legal action. Despite these efforts, the perpetrator remains elusive and unresponsive.
In spite of taking every possible precaution to guard against malicious crypto operators, one investor has lost more than $100,000. As the dear price of partaking in the crypto world, Matthias Mende, co-founder of the Dubai Blockchain Center and originator of the Bonuz project, shared his bitter story with Cointelegraph after a hacker stripped him of his crypto assets. On June 25, Mende detailed the loss of more than $100,000 in crypto assets, as well as his Solana Name Service (SNS) domains, "mende.sol" and "bonuz.sol." He warned his followers about the increasing number of nefarious actors within the crypto realm. Despite employing robust security measures and refraining from opening suspicious links, Mende is at a loss about how his assets were taken. He doesn't store his seed phrases digitally. Mende had recently purchased tokens in a Solana (SOL) pre-sale and was optimistic about the investment. However, only days later, he found his wallet empty. The perpetrator initially took 320 SOL tokens, equivalent to roughly $46,000. When the perpetrator discovered more tokens in the wallet, they made a return of some SOL tokens to act as gas then fully cleared out the wallet, resulting in total losses roughly amounting to $100,000. Recounting the moment he discovered his funds were drained, Mende shared the shock and distress he experienced, though he resolved to remain focused on the present and what could be done. Considering his long-term commitment to Web3 security, Mende was incredulous at the breach. In 2023, he launched Bonuz, a security solution intended to counter social identity theft on the blockchain. Despite his loss, Mende has reported the occurrence to Dubai's cybercrime division, hoping that crypto exchanges can freeze the funds if they are moved to their platforms. He is working with digital forensics experts to pinpoint the perpetrator and has issued a warning to the hacker to return the stolen funds or face legal action. Though he knows exactly where the coins are, the hacker's identity remains a mystery. However, if the cybercrime division can determine the hackers are based in the UAE, Mende assured they would be directly apprehended. Despite efforts to reclaim his assets and his posted plea for their return, the hacker remains unresponsive.
