India Tests AI Technology for More Accurate Climate Forecasts

Algoine News
Summary:
India's Government is experimenting with artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance the forecasting of severe weather conditions, expecting it to generate superior, cost-effective weather data, according to K.S. Hosalikar from the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The IMD currently uses mathematical models for predictions but aims to increase local weather observatories for more detailed data. This move is critical given India's diverse weather patterns and the increasing climate change-related threats to its 1.4 billion population and massive agricultural sector. Innovations like blockchain and crypto are also being used to optimize weather data collection.
The Government of India is experimenting with artificial intelligence (AI) for creating models that can predict harsh climatic conditions, as per a leading weather official in the country. K.S. Hosalikar, the chief of climate research and services at the India Meteorological Department (IMD), expressed his anticipation that upgraded climate forecasting powered by AI will aid in better predictions, especially for extreme weather events such as droughts and floods. Currently, the IMD relies on mathematical models and supercomputers for forecasting. However, the agency is optimistic about AI's potential to deliver superior, cost-effective weather data. Hosalikar shared that AI is already being utilized for issuing public warnings for extreme weather conditions and health hazards like malaria. The IMD has set sights on increasing the number of weather observation stations at the village level aiming for more detailed forecasting data. The government has initiated a center specifically to investigate the feasibility of integrating AI into conventional weather prediction practices and is planning a series of workshops and conferences. Relatedly, precise weather forecasting is highly crucial for a country like India, with diverse climatic conditions, to protect its 1.4 billion population from escalating risks of severe droughts, heatwaves, and intense flooding. Besides, India's pivotal position in global agricultural production as the second largest producer of rice, wheat, and sugar adds to the importance. Propositions for using AI to combat climate change were raised at the recent Wired Impact Conference in London. Sims Witherspoon, the climate action lead from Google's DeepMind, proposed an "Understand, Optimize, Accelerate" strategy. The methodology of collecting weather data is already changing, with innovative tech like blockchain and crypto coming into play. For instance, start-up WeatherXM has established hundreds of decentralized weather stations globally, collecting local data and rewarding station owners with utility tokens.
