Huobi Global Loses $7.9M in Crypto Hack; Offers 5% 'White-Hat Bonus' for Returned Funds

Algoine News
Summary:
Huobi Global, the cryptocurrency exchange, fell prey to a $7.9 million cyber theft on September 24, as uncovered by blockchain analytic firm Cyvers. Post-attack, the exchange identified the hacker, proposing to offer them a 5% "white-hat bonus" if they return 95% of the stolen assets. The proposed deal, conveyed via a message from an active Huobi wallet, has a validity of seven days until October 2, 2023. The incident is still unfolding with more information expected soon.
The crypto trading platform Huobi Global became the most recent victim of a cyberattack on September 24, which was exposed by the blockchain analysis enterprise Cyvers. Cybercriminals successfully siphoned off cryptocurrency worth $7.9 million in the breach. The exchange, formerly known as "HTX," following a rebranding, identified the perpetrator shortly. A prominent active Huobi wallet, referred to as the hot wallet, addressed the hacker via a Chinese message. Based on the content, the exchange has recognized the hacker's identity, offering them a 5% "white-hat bonus" if they retain the stolen cryptocurrency. This deal is conditional, however, as the cybercriminal must restore the remaining 95%. Cyvers raised the alarm about a dubious deal involving @HuobiGlobal and @HTX_Global. Despite their efforts to touch base, they did not receive any answer. An EOA acquired 5K $ETH $7.9M from @HuobiGlobal's hot wallet. On September 24, 10 a.m. UTC, the allegedly compromised Huobi hot wallet, 0x2Abc22eb9A09EbBE7b41737CCde147F586EfeB6A, dispatched an amount of 4,999 Ether (ETH), roughly valued at $7.9 million, to an unfamiliar address. The succeeding morning, Huobi extended another Chinese message to the cyber culprit via a distinct wallet, stating their knowledge of the hacker's identity and demanding the restoration of the stolen crypto assets. It also outlines a 5% reward in return for their cooperation. This offer comes with a time limit, effective for only seven days until October 2, 2023. The cybercrime was shared with the public on Sept 25 by Cyvers. Arkham Intelligence's blockchain analytics software identifies the wallet that delivered the message as a Huobi hot wallet. More details surrounding the incident are forthcoming as events unfold.
