Google Tightens AI Regulations Ahead of 2024 Global Elections

Algoine News
Summary:
Google plans to limit the response scope of its AI bot, Bard, and Search Generative Experience (SGE) to specific election-related queries by 2024. This regulation comes ahead of the U.S. Presidential and other worldwide elections. Google aims to assist users in identifying AI-generated content and has mandated AI disclosures in political ads. A notable move endorsed by YouTube, a Google subsidiary, which now requires creators to disclose AI usage. Google also introduced a beta stage tool, SynthID from DeeMind, to watermark AI-generated content. This comes as AI's increasing influence on elections and voter sentiments becomes evident.
In a blog post on December 19, Google detailed how it intends to curtail specific election-associated inquiries that its AI bot Bard and Search Generative Experience (SGE) can respond to. The limitation is set to be in action by the beginning of 2024, in preparation for the forthcoming Presidential election in the United States. The article emphasized that 2024 will also host a number of other significant elections worldwide, apart from the U.S. Presidential election. Google added that it intends to concentrate more diligently on the possible influence of artificial intelligence (AI) in these contexts. One of Google's prominent objectives is aiding users to distinguish content produced by AI. Earlier in the year, it was one of the initial Big Tech firms applying AI to insist on AI disclosures in political election advertising. In related news, a US politician employed an AI campaign telecaller in the run-up to the 2024 elections, as reported earlier. November this year saw YouTube, a Google subsidiary, revamp its policies, mandating content creators to reveal their use of generative AI or risk getting their accounts suspended. In a similar move, Google announced the beta testing of a new tool, SynthID, from its DeeMind department; it directly imbeds a digital watermark into audio and images created by AI. Meanwhile, Meta, the umbrella corporation for Facebook and Instagram, prohibited the application of generative AI tools for creating political ads, as of November 2024. As the U.S. elections approach, the role of AI has become a pronounced concern. Research indicates the potential bearing of AI usage on social media on voters' sentiment. Another study conducted in Europe disclosed that about 30% of the responses provided by Microsoft’s Bing AI chatbot (currently rebranded to Copilot) concerning elections are misleading or inaccurate.
