Google Teams Up with Reddit for AI Development, Signals New Era in Online Interactions

Algoine News
Summary:
Google is partnering with Reddit to use the platform's content for artificial intelligence training. Reddit will provide its data application programming interface for Google, while gaining access to Google's Vertex AI service. This move doesn't alter the existing commercial access restrictions for Reddit's data API. The alliance follows a $60 million training contract by Reddit with an undisclosed AI firm and precedes Reddit's upcoming IPO.
Marking a new turn in the tech world, search engine giant Google will be teaming up with social networking site Reddit, utilizing the site's content to train its artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms. Through this cooperation, Reddit's vast archives of content will be made available via its data application programming interface (API) for Google to enhance its services. Reddit, on the other hand, will gain access to Google's Vertex AI—an AI service aimed at enriching search engine results for businesses. However, Reddit emphasizes that this collaboration doesn't affect the existing terms of its data API, which still prohibits commercial use without prior authorization. This partnership news has surfaced shortly after reports of Reddit landing a $60 million training contract with an undisclosed AI firm. Over the last year, Reddit has expressed plans to monetize the use of its API by corporations. This deal with Google is Reddit's first confirmed association with a major AI enterprise. In 2023, Google altered its privacy policy to permit the use of public data for AI training purposes. This came following allegations against OpenAI, the creator of the renowned AI chatbot ChatGPT, over scraping user's private data from the internet. Meanwhile, AI start-up Anthropic has vowed, starting from January 2024, not to use client data for training large language models, according to updates on the commercial terms of service from Claude developer. Despite this collaboration, Google and Reddit have had their clashes in the past. In fact, Reddit has previously warned Google of potential restrictions over possible free usage of its data by companies to train AI models without compensation. In another monumental milestone, Reddit filed for its initial public offering (IPO) on February 22, after a valuation came in over $10 billion in 2021. The IPO is expected to go live in March, marking the first significant social media IPO since Pinterest in 2019. As AI evolves, developers have been increasing their alliances with content owners to expand their training data beyond standard web scraping, as content owners have previously claimed unauthorized use of their material.
