Google Plans Job Cuts in 2024 to Propel AI and Other Strategic Goals, States CEO Sundar Pichai

Algoine News
Summary:
Sundar Pichai, Google's CEO, reveals in a recent memo that some jobs will be cut in 2024 to reach the company's ambitious goals in AI and other fields. These cuts, necessary for resource allocation, will not affect all sectors within the company. This comes a year after Alphabet, Google's parent company, made significant worldwide job reductions. Despite criticism over its AI model, Gemini, Google plans to continue heavy investments in AI technology in 2024.
In an internal memo dispersed on January 17, Google's CEO, Sundar Pichai, indicated that some job positions would need to be voided in 2024 to attain the company's "aspirational objectives" in several domains like artificial intelligence (AI). This memo, titled "2024 priorities and the upcoming year," as observed and reported by the Verge and CNBC, conveyed Pichai's remark, "Our objectives are lofty and we'll be pouring resources into our major concerns this year." He acknowledged that "to free up resources for this investment, it's inevitable we make challenging decisions." This obliges, for some teams, the termination of roles and "streamlining structures to enhance execution and hasten progress.โ€ Regardless, he also stated that the extent of job cuts would not be as substantial as the previous year and that "not all teams will be affected." Pichai confirmed that particular teams will further "decide on resource allocation." Just a year ago, Google's parent company, Alphabet, publicized job cuts accounting for 6% of its worldwide personnel. By September of that year, the firm had dismissed 182,381 international employees. AI stands as a chief investment area for Google in 2024. The company's objectives for AI will be revealed later in the week. Google ended the previous year in December by unveiling its most proficient model so far, Gemini, originally labeled as a strong competitor for OpenAI's widely popular GPT-4 model. Regardless, Gemini received a lukewarm reception after allegations arose that its promotional video exaggerated the model's capabilities. In response, Google acknowledged that some promotional content was altered for "clarity." Subsequently, Google reduced the cost of the pro version of AI model Gemini and expressed its intent to make the tools more user-friendly for developers to craft their custom versions, mirroring ChatGPT's premium feature enabling users to create personalized GPTs.
