Google has pledged to shield users of its Google Cloud and Workspace platforms, who make use of generative artificial intelligence (AI) technologies, from potential copyright infringement disputes. This promise puts the tech giant in line with other firms like Microsoft and Adobe, who have extended similar commitments. In a recent blog, Google assured that customers leveraging its generative AI integrated products would qualify for legal coverage, amid growing concerns surrounding potential intellectual property issues linked to generative AI. Google identified seven products that would be eligible for this legal coverage including both text and image generation functionalities in Workspace's Duet AI and Google Cloud's Duet AI, Vertex AI Search, Conversation, and Text Embedding API, Visual Captioning on Vertex AI and Codey APIs. Google's Bard search tool, wasn't included in the list. Google stated that in the event of any copyright challenges, they would shoulder the potential legal risks. Google has put forth a novel two-pronged approach to intellectual property indemnification. Through this, the company extends its coverage to both the training data and the results derived from its fundamental models. This implies that if someone faces legal action due to the use of copyrighted material in Google's training data, Google will handle the legal repercussions. Google asserted that although protection related to training data isn't new, customers sought explicit assurance that such protection covers cases where copyrighted material is included in the training data. In a related development, Google Assistant will soon incorporate Bard AI chat service. Google added that it would offer protection in instances where the outputs obtained from it's foundational models lead to legal issues. This includes cases where users produce content that closely mirrors published works, as long as infringement isn't intentional. Other firms have made similar pledges. Microsoft has undertaken to bear legal responsibility for enterprise users of its Copilot products. Adobe also asserted its commitment to protecting enterprise customers from copyright, privacy, and publicity rights allegations when they use Firefly.
