Global Coalition Pledges to Combat AI-Generated Abusive Content Online

Algoine News
Summary:
In colaboration with major social media platforms, AI developers, and NGOs, several governments, including the United States, Australia, Korea, Germany, and Italy, issued a joint policy statement pledging to tackle abusive content generated by AI. This initiative, led by the U.K, includes 27 signatories and emphasizes the potential misuse of AI, particularly in facilitating child sexual abuse online. The statement urges transparency regarding the monitoring and control of AI exploitation by offenders and the implementation of policies to combat such abuse.
In a united effort to battle content abuse fueled by artificial intelligence (AI), several large social media platforms, AI developers, governments, and NGOs have teamed up and committed publicly. Issued by the UK on October 30, this policy declaration includes 27 signatories, amongst them governments from U.S.A, Australia, Korea, Germany and Italy, and social media platforms such as SnapChat, TikTok and OnlyFans. It also has the support of AI platforms Stability AI and Ontocord.AI, and various NGOs focused on internet safety and children's rights. As per the statement, despite AI offering significant potential in countering online child sexual abuse, it can also serve as a tool for predators to produce such illicit materials. Statistics from the Internet Watch Foundation reveal that out of 11,108 AI-produced images shared on a dark web forum within a month, 2,978 portrayed content associated with child sexual abuse. The UK government stated the joint declaration serves as a commitment to “comprehend and, when suitable, respond to the risks stemming from AI in dealing with child sexual abuse.” The responsibility lies with all players to ensure children are secured from the dangers of pioneering AI technologies. They urged complete clarity regarding strategies for monitoring and controlling the misuse of AI by child sexual predators and encouraged countries to implement regulations surrounding the topic. The statement also seeks to keep the dialogue around combating child sexual abuse in the era of AI ongoing. This particular statement was unveiled just prior to the UK's global summit on AI safety, which took place this week. As AI technology usage grows rapidly, child safety has become a focal point for discussion. A recent example is the lawsuit against Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, lodged by 34 states in the U.S. on October 26 regarding child safety issues.
