GenAI Poised to Trigger Job Losses in Film and Animation Industry, Predicts CVL Economics Report
Summary:
The film and animation industry is likely to face extensive job losses due to Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI), more than other sectors, according to a report by CVL Economics. The study, which surveyed 300 leaders in entertainment, found that 75% recognized job loss due to GenAI. It predicts Sound Designers, Music Editors, Audio Technicians, and Sound Engineers to be most affected. Despite successful contract negotiations, worker unions remain concerned about job security. Leaders also anticipate GenAI to generate 3D assets, realistic sound designs, and foreign language dubbing. Recent layoffs across different organizations suggest future job reductions.
Generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) is projected to cause considerable job losses in the film and animation sector, more than other industries, according to a January 2024 analysis by consultancy firm CVL Economics. The finding is a result of a survey of 300 heads in six distinct entertainment sectors, spanning C-Suite execs, senior leaders, and managing personnel, conducted from November 17 to December 22, 2023.
The study, labeled “FUTURE UNSCRIPTED: The Impact of Generative Artificial Intelligence on Entertainment Industry Jobs”, determined that 75% of polled participants recognized the role of GenAI tools, software and models in leading to job elimination, reduction or centralization within their respective units. GenAI utilizes machine learning to interpret and mimic patterns from existing data, generating diverse content such as graphics, texts, and musical pieces without explicit human coding.
The report further reveals a consensus among 75% of entertainment industry veterans that GenAI has expedited job losses in their sectors. The analysis indicates that Sound Designers are expected to bear most of the impact in the coming three years, as predicted by 55% of the leaders. Over 40% anticipate that Music Editors, Audio Technicians, and Sound Engineers might be exposed to significant risk, and around 33% foresee the effects on songwriters, composers, and studio engineers.
The tech innovation prompted the Writers Guild of America (WGA) and the Screen Actors Guild–American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) to stage a strike in July 2023, following the introduction of ChatGPT. The professionals protested against the possible loss of job roles and security arising from AI advancements.
Companies before the strike were utilizing writers' content to instruct GenAI systems and to generate digital recreations and characters modeled on actors, raising fears amongst workers of replacement by GenAI.
Despite recently successful negotiations with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP), the WGA and SAG-AFTRA members remain apprehensive about the unidentified implications of GenAI on the film and television industry and other entertainment divisions.
CVL Economics’ study adds that 47% of business leaders are confident in GenAI efficiently producing 3D assets and realistic sound designs for films, television, and video games within the next trio of years. 44% also believe in GenAI’s ability to create realistic and persuasive foreign language dubbing for cinematic or television dialogues, and 39% expect GenAI to be generating music mixes and masters by 2026.
However, with organizations like Riot Games, Unity Software, Amazon MGM Studios, Pixar, and Universal Music Group already announcing layoffs early into 2024, CVL Economics anticipates additional job reductions in the coming months.
