France Debuts Groundbreaking Institute of Crypto-Assets as Part of Digital Innovation Push
Summary:
The inaugural Institute of Crypto-Assets, focused on research about blockchain technology and cryptocurrencies, has been officially opened at the Léonard de Vinci center in Paris. The institute has a scientific board of 11 experts from top French education bodies and a practitioner committee including co-founder of Ledger, Nicolas Bacca. Attention will be primarily on education, with regular public events planned. This is part of France's push to lead in Europe's digital economy and innovation, with significant investments in fintech during the first half of 2023.
On November 8, the groundbreaking Institute of Crypto-Assets was inaugurated at the Léonard de Vinci center, situated in the commercial district on the outskirts of Paris. The Institute is set to foster and execute research in the fields of blockchain technology and cryptocurrencies. Its academic committee comprises 11 professionals from prominent French educational entities, such as the National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS) and École polytechnique. Moreover, a team of six industry practitioners, including Ledger's co-founder, Nicolas Bacca, and Paymium, a crypto exchange's founder, Pierre Noizat, will provide their expertise to the projects of the Institute. Cyril Grunspan, the director of the Cryptoassets Institute, stressed that the focus would primarily be on education, saying, “Rather than lobbying, we aim to establish a platform for dialogue on crypto-assets.” The inauguration was marked by two significant lectures - historian Jacques Favier discussed the development of currency culminating in Bitcoin, and cryptographer David Pointcheval elaborated on zero-knowledge proof and anonymity. Regular public events of this nature are anticipated at the Institute in the future. France is aggressively working to position itself as a leader in Europe in terms of the digital economy and innovation. In September, Iliad, a local telecom group, disclosed an investment of 100 million euros ($106 million) for establishing an "excellence lab" in Paris, focusing on AI research. Besides the lab, Iliad secured what it described as “the most powerful cloud-native AI supercomputer deployed to date in Europe.” During the first half of the market crisis in 2023, French crypto enterprises managed to secure 27% of all new investment deals concluded in the fintech domain.
