Filecoin Foundation Showcases Efficiency of Decentralized Systems in Space Communications

Algoine News
Summary:
At the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, Marta Belcher, president of Filecoin Foundation, discussed the foundation's successful demonstration of sending files from Earth to space and back using the InterPlanetary File System (IPFS). The system, created through a three-year collaboration with aerospace corporation, Lockheed Martin, offered more efficient space communications than centralized systems. Belcher also highlighted the benefits of data verification and resiliency against factors such as space radiation and debris provided by decentralized systems and the IPFS.
During the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, Switzerland, Kristina Lucrezia Cornèr, a representative and senior editor for Cointelegraph, had a discussion with Marta Belcher, president and chairperson of Filecoin Foundation. They talked about the foundation's quest to showcase decentralized technologies being utilized in space communication methods. Filecoin Foundation had previously announced their initial operation to install IPFS in space; this year, they revealed an exciting progress update. On January 16, the Filecoin Foundation shared the successful completion of a test sending files from Earth to space and back again using the InterPlanetary File System (IPFS)–a method implemented for space communications. Belcher revealed that this accomplishment resulted from nearly three years of collaborative work with the aerospace corporation, Lockheed Martin. She stated that this effort has confirmed the practical applications of decentralized systems in space and that these systems were always intended to enable distant networking, hence the name "InterPlanetary File System." Belcher further highlighted the superior efficiency of decentralized systems in space communication compared to centralized systems. While the former have proven to manage well on Earth, Belcher noted they experienced delays in space, because each data retrieval operation required a round trip from Earth to space. However, with a decentralized system, data could be accessed from the nearest satellite rather than from its original location. Moreover, IPFS offers another notable benefit of data verification–it guarantees the originality of the data by cryptographically checking that the delivered data remains unaltered. This is especially beneficial when it comes to validating the originality of satellite images, Belcher mentioned. Furthermore, Belcher pointed out the susceptibility of centralized architecture to radiation and space debris. Due to these issues, data storage in space is complex as factors like radiation can cause data corruption. However, with a decentralized protocol, these complications wouldn't pose a problem as multiple copies of files could be stored, thus ensuring data availability even if one file gets corrupted.
